More Than Meets the Eye
“Beyond the Surface” is a celebration of the visual language of art that is steeped in history and traditions. This exhibit represents the merging of two artists, Lynne Adams and Michael MacTavish whose optimism and keen love of nature form the unifying thread of their art. How it speaks to them and what arises for them within can be seen in their work. However, the way these conversations with nature show up on their canvases is very different.
There is so much going on on the surface of each piece of art, but at the same time the surface is hinting at a much more in depth calling to a deeper and more profound sense of what is. It is the suggestion of mystery that is so important to Michael and Lynne’s work. The beauty on the surface is merely a guidepost for you to delve into what is beyond.
Lynne and Michael were exploring new approaches to their painting and thought it would be interesting to exhibit work that resulted from their explorations. They have a strong affinity for each others’ art, and they were curious to see how their work might resonate using similar motifs such as trees, sky, mountains and water.
Their impressionistic styles are soothing and inviting, bringing a sense of peacefulness and tranquility. They explore the use of color and vibrancy in a way that allows the viewer to create his or her own understanding of the painting while enjoying the sense of familiarity.
